Sub-Committee, Rail Transport

This Sub-Committee is a working group dedicated to advancing transportation-related issues. It is made up of manufacturers in the wind sector, the Société de chemin de fer de la Gaspésie, the ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et des Exportations, the ministère des Transports du Québec and the Wind Energy Cluster management.

In 2011-2012 this Sub-Committee managed the project for transporting blades by rail, load testing conducted in the framework of the Quebec Wind Energy Conference (photo) as well as the verification of clearances of the Port-Daniel tunnel. Both the load testing and clearance verifications were successful.

As the railroad between New Carlisle and Gaspé is currently out of service due to upgrades required at a significant number of bridges, the activities of this committee are currently suspended. The Société de chemin de fer de la Gaspésie is optimistic that it can resume rail transport of blades by 2015.

Sub-Committee, Transport of Large Components by Boat

In light of the uncertainty associated with the train, the Cluster Committee undertook initiatives to carry out a project for transporting turbine blades by boat within Quebec. Exchanges held with St. Lawrence Shipoperators and with Énergie de France (EDF) Énergies Nouvelles Canada spurred the creation of a committee for a maritime transport pilot project in preparation of the construction of the Rivière-du-Moulin Wind Farm located in the Lower Saguenay. Despite the best efforts of the participants, it was not possible under the circumstances to identify an efficient solution for the project in question.
